KAMPALA -The embattled former Leader of Opposition in Parliament Mathias Mpuuga Nsamba, who doubles as the Nyendo-Mukungwe legislator has finally responded to the demand from his National Unity Platform (NUP) party to step down as the parliamentary commissioner.
This follows shocking revelations from the ongoing online exhibition dubbed #TheParliamentExhibition leveling accusations against him for taking part in the designing of a controversial financial scheme in which he pocketed Shs500 millions of taxpayers’ money in the name of "Service award."
Ever since this came to limelight, NUP party leadership has undertaken several disciplinary errands against the latter as an attempt clean itself of the act, they considered to be corruption.
" As leaders, we advised him to honorably do three things; first, return that money because it's dirty money, number two, to apologize to the nation, and number three; to resign." Said Bobi wine during the launch of the Wakiso District mobilization activities at the party headquarters on March 1st, 2024.
While as NUP maintains that Mpuuga had initially confessed and regretted the act of conspiring with NRM's commissioners and the Speaker to award himself the 500m Uganda shillings, Mpuuga dismissed the reports and denied to never to have involved himself in graft.
Amidst anxiety of whether he shall bow to his party's pressure or do the opposite, he has held a Press conference today in the parliamentary boardroom from which he asserted that he is not about to leave his party, but he is set to embark on a process of instilling Internal reforms within the same party.
" Let me now assure the entire NUP leadership, membership, supporters and the general public, that NUP is my party and I harbor no intentions whatsoever of leaving; I am going Nowhere, rather I’ll in the coming days embark on a process of instituting internal Party reforms to make it a credible and competent Government in waiting." Read Mpuuga's press statement.
He also declined to respond to the NUP's letter written to the speaker of parliament requesting for his removal from the position of commissioner of Parliament.
"Secondly, I have seen a copy of a letter circulating on social media. The owner of the copy is visible from the bottom. The letter is addressed to the Rt. Hon. Speaker of Parliament, and I’m only informed of the contents by copy. I will not respond thereto, save to restate my position as communicated to the party and the country. "
During the dusk of Tuesday, March 26, there has been a letter making rounds on social media purportedly coming from the speaker's office objecting the removal of Mpuuga from his current position.
"Parties lack the requisite legal mandate to recall a commissioner of Parliament once elected by Parliament. " The letter reads.
